What is the ALL LIFT Scholarship?

This is yearly scholarship program for ALL SIG members to cover expenses for select courses related to upskilling in matters of accessibility.

Why should EFL teachers avail of the scholarship?

Language teachers in Japan are expected to support learners with diverse needs in their respective classes. Some educators experiment with approaches with the intention of creating a more accessible and inclusive classroom. Unfortunately, without the necessary training and support, a trial-and-error approach can often be ineffective and inefficient. These situations necessitate some form of professional development or upskilling programs. With training on accessibility and inclusion, educators feel more empowered to meet the needs of their students.

Disability Inclusion in Education: Building Systems of Support
[by the University of Cape Town]

What it’s about:

📚 A 5-module course, from the University of Cape Town, for all teachers who are ready to support students with severe to profound hearing, visual, or intellectual disabilities through concrete, ready-to-use classroom strategies.

Key things to experience through the course:

✅ Walk away knowing exactly what these learners need to access language learning

🔧 Learn to build simple support systems so inclusion becomes a natural part of your classroom — not an extra task piled on top

🗣️ Learn directly from experts, fellow teachers, and disability activists through real conversations — not dry theory.

💪 Build genuine "disability confidence" — practical know-how and the right mindset to adapt your teaching without feeling overwhelmed.

Universal Design for Learning Mindset: Credential 1

What it's about:

Credential 1: UDL Mindset, from CAST, introduces Universal Design for Learning (UDL) — a framework that's less about "fixing" struggling students and more about designing lessons that work for the wide range of learners already sitting in your classroom.

Key mindset shifts you'll explore:

🌟 There's no "average" student. Every learner is a unique mix of strengths and challenges — great listener but nervous writer, sharp with grammar but shy about speaking, and everything in between. That mix of differences isn't rare — it's just what a classroom looks like.

🔍 Struggle isn't a flaw in the student — it's a flaw in the design. When someone can't access a lesson, the question isn't "what's wrong with them?" It's "what about this material or task is getting in the way?" That one reframe can transform how you plan.

🚀 The end goal: independent, confident learners. UDL isn't just about clearing hurdles — it's about helping students become purposeful, resourceful, and self-directed, so they keep growing their skills long after your class ends.

From 2026, the LIFT scholarship is also available for the members of our LIFT Benefactors and LIFT Sponsors. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to complete certificate courses and be contributors to this growing family of educators supporting accessibility and inclusive learning environments.
